Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer told Parliament a television program used to support the treason claim against Zimbabwe's Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai is extremely unconvincing.
"Our Government deplores the laying of formal charges for treason against Mr Tsvangirai," he said."The harassment of the Opposition in Zimbabwe must stop and we on this side of the House, the Australian Government, is deeply sceptical, deeply sceptical of the basis of this charge."
Downer said the international community's response to the Commonwealth decision to suspend Zimbabwe was overwhelmingly positive.Democrats Senator, Andrew Murray, who grew up in Zimbabwe said he is not optimistic about the future for the country's Opposition leader.
"Next it's going to be followed with a show trial of Mr Tsvangirai and they'll use the SBS film as their show piece to get their show trial done and then I expect an execution," he said.
