Prime Minister John Howard was assailed by callers to an Adelaide talkback radio program who demanded he introduce capital punishment or use the army to clear heroin traffickers from Sydney's western suburbs."I have never really favoured a death penalty myself because I recognise that the law can make mistakes and once you have executed someone you can't repair the error," Howard replied. Mr Howard said the army could was there for defence of Australia and for use in national emergencies, not for use against criminals.
