the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh confirmed the death sentence awarded to five of the six people condemned for the murder of Shazneen Tasnim Rahman. The conviction of the sixth accused, Sony Ram Mondal, was set aside as charges against him could not be proved beyond reasonable doubt.
The accused were Syed Sajjad M Hasan, a contractor who was engaged in repair work at Shazneen's residence, his assistant Badal, servant Sahidul Islam, female house-maids Estema Khatun Minu and Parvin and carpenter Sani Ram Mondal.
Shazneen, teenage daughter of Latifur Rahman, owner of the The Star and The Prothom Alo dailies, was raped and killed at her residence at Gulshan on April 23, 1998.
