BANGLADESH. SIX PIRATES SENTENCED TO DEATH

six pirates were sentenced to death by the district and sessions court in Narayanganj, Bangladesh, for the murder of two crew members of a sand carrying trawler that was hijacked from the Buriganga River.
Those sentenced to death were: Ayub Hossain Babul, Shamsul Islam, Mohammad Ripon, Shafiqul Islam, Sohel and Shafiul Bashar - all aged between 35 and 45. The six had reportedly admitted their guilt in their confessional statement to the magistrate.
The prosecution said the pirates hijacked the sand-loaded trawler Suphia-2 on April 1, 2005 with mechanic Hossain Sheikh and cook Rabiul on board.
Taking the trawler to Gognagar the convicts tied the hands and legs of Hossain and Rabiul and threw them into the river. Hossain’s body was found by police three days later.
