China joined the U.S. alliance against terrorism partly because it wants international support for its own campaign against Muslim separatists based in the western region of Xinjiang.
China's effort has intensified since September 11, with the execution of at least seven people and the arrest of dozens more.
A failure by the U.S. to warn China about such measures may encourage even more ferocious repression.
