CHINESE COURT SENTENCES MAN TO DEATH IN FATAL COUNTERFEIT LIQUOR CASE

the Higher People's Court in China’s Guangdong Province sentenced 27-year-old Cheng Caiming to death in the last instance for a counterfeit liquor scandal that left 14 people dead and 41 others injured. The court maintained the death penalty which he got in first instance at the Guangdong Intermediate People's Court in May 2005 and confiscated all his personal property. The court also kept the jail terms of 14 other defendants involved in the scandal.
Cheng was found guilty of selling more than ten barrels of industrial alcohol, disguised as drinkable alcohol, to Yi Xinling. Yi later sold the alcohol to four owners of illegal breweries who made a liquor mixed with formaldehyde that killed 14 people and injured 41.
