Contact visits for the best-behaved inmates on California's death row have been restored, at least in part, following extensive redesign of the old visiting room. Inmates may now meet with friends and families in separate metal enclosures that have been set up in what was formerly a communal visiting area. Inmate advocates say appointments are now fewer and harder to get, but the redesigned visiting room is better than the alternative -telephone conversations carried on from behind a thick plastic shield.
