Corporal Pimundu Gimaro of the Ugandan Military Police was sentenced to death by the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) field court martial for cowardice and failure to carry out duties. It was reported that Gimaro committed the offences on August 31 when he failed to respond to information from a civilian that the Lord's Resistance Army rebels had attacked a village near his station. The nine-member court martial, chaired by the UPDF 3rd division commander, Andrew Guti, ruled that Gimaro's omissions led to the death of eight civilians at the hands of the rebels who had attacked Agasi village. "This court is final. There is no appeal. You have been sentenced to death," Guti had announced at the trial. A prosecution witness had told court how he struggled to reach the UPDF and yet Gimaro ignored his report.
