a delegation of the NGOs, calling themselves the "Congolese Coalition Against Death Penalty," met national assembly speaker Olivier Kamitatu to submit their grievance.
"The DR Congo once had subscribed to the abolition of death penalty. I do not understand why the Senate's legal commission removed the measure," said the chairman of the coalition, Lievin Ngondji. Following their meeting with Kamitatu, Ngondji noted that the move was not designed to "decriminalise crimes but rather to choose other sanctions other than death penalty."
