Five alleged UNITA and/or Caprivi Liberation Army (CLA) guerrillas were arrested and instantly killed by Namibian Defence Force (NDF) troops.
A reliable NDF source informed monitors of the National Society for Human Rights of the guerrillas that were all shot in the head at point blank ranges and their brains were dislodged completely, the source said.
International humanitarian law proscribes the execution of captured fighters. However, media reports citing the Ministry of Defence, said that the fighters were killed "in exchange of fire" with NDF soldiers.
The incident took place between Omega and Chetto villages in Western Caprivi on February 11 after NDF soldiers conducted a follow up operation against armed persons who had reportedly attacked a civilian vehicle belonging to the NDF in the area.
One of the three dead soldiers is said to be about 70 years old while two others may between 40 and 50 years old. The whereabouts of the bodies of two other alleged guerrillas were not immediately known.
