Four members of Burma's former ruling family were sentenced to death by hanging after a court found them guilty of treason. The court ruled that the son-in-law and three grandchildren of General Ne Win, who ruled the country with an iron hand for 26 years, had plotted to depose the Government. Ne Win's grandsons, Aye Ne Win, 25, Kyaw Ne Win, 23, and Zwe Ne Win, 21, angrily told the court they would not appeal the verdict, while their father, Aye Zaw Win, remained silent. Pun Sein, the lawyer for the men, said he would try to persuade them to appeal within the seven-day period allowed. The military court found that the four men had tried to stage a coup with a small contingent of soldiers assigned to guard the former general.
