Four young men were sentenced to death in Bangladesh for the rape and murder of Hasina Banu, 15, in 1999. Miazuddin, the judge, handed down the death penalty to the victim's cousin Imrul, 25, and his associates Kader, Masudur and Jahangir. Three others were acquitted. According to the prosecution Imrul made advances to Hasina, who turned his proposal. Enraged, Imrul mobilised support from amongst his friends and on the night of March 5, 1999 they picked up Hasina from her bed when she was asleep and took her to a nearby mango orchard. There they raped her, then they set fire to her with Kerosene burning her to death.
