Franco Zeffirelli, speaking in relation to the murder of a eight year old girl, Sara Jay Cusma, declared that the death penalty or exile to a far away island would be the right punishment for those who commit such crimes. Zeffirelli declared that it is a crime which should make people reflect on whether to send in pension all those do-gooders, psychologist and social assistants who bombard us with justifications for every type of crime. Every unpunished crime is a fault of the law towards the victims that will follow. I don' t think it would be possible to fully adopt the American law, but there should be the severest of punishments in the most extreme cases, those that cry for revenge. I believe that if there was a referendum on the subject that the majority of Italians would be in favour of the death penalty for the most violent crimes. Capital punishment could act as a deterrent. As an alternative the authors of such crimes could be sent to a far away island, totally isolated by civilised society. Our laws are futile and confused as the facts which occured in Bologna show."
