Hands Off Cain’s online campaign launched in Spain

HOC’s online campaign for a global moratorium on executions through a UN resolution is being promoted in collaboration with Nexta.com.
The Madrid launch was hosted by one of the city’s largest Internet cafes, BBIGG at 21, Calle Alacalà at 13.00 CET.
The launch was attended by the European MP Emma Bonino, HOC secretary Sergio d’Elia, the writer Fernando Savater, Italian pop-rock singer Enrico Ruggeri representing the Nazionale Italiana Cantanti, Nexta CEO Piero Muscarà, representatives of the Spanish Foreign Affairs Ministry and Spanish showbiz stars, and personalities from the Spanish cultural and political scenes including Carmen Alborch, Soledad Puértolas, Cristina Almeida, Gallego y Rey, Benito Zambrano, Raquel Meroño, Silvia Abascal, Ramoncín, Cristina del Valle, Greta y los Garbo, Mercedes Milá, Abraham García e Nuria Varela.
Other well-known personalities who are supporting HOC’s moratorium campaign, but were unable to attend the launch are: Felipe González, Carmen Romero, Elvira Lindo, Antonio Múñoz Molina, Terelu, Maruja Torres, Susana Griso, Forges, Anabel Alonso, Ana Belén, Bigas Luna, Jesús Vázquez, Carlos Sobera, Agatha Ruiz de la Prada.
The event was sponsored by the Nazionale Italiana Cantanti, El Mundo.es, the European Union , MTV Spain, Ya.com, Nexta.com and Studio Toscani.
Madrid was the second stage of HOC’s online campaign, launched in Rome a year ago, and scheduled to take in Paris, New York, Tokyo, Athens and Washington.
The event in Madrid was aimed to raise public awareness in Spain on the death penalty issue. Spain is the current EU term president and, as such, it is up to the Spanish government to reinforce international support for a resolution for universal moratorium on executions sponsored by the EU at the next session of the UN Commission for Human Rights, that opens in Geneva on March 18.
