on the eve of the establishment of the new government in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Hands Off Cain, the organisation campaigning for a UN moratorium on capital executions, will be in the country between the 26th and the 29th of June in order to ask President Joseph Kabila to grant clemency to the 30 men condemned to death for the assassination of his father Laurent Kabila.
The delegation which will meet with President Joseph Kabila will include Sergio d’Elia, Secretary of Hands Off Cain, Emma Bonino MEP and European Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Hands Off Cain treasurer Elisabetta Zamparutti. The mission, which is part of a project backed by the European Union in order that a resolution for a universal moratorium on capital executions is approved at the next UN General Assembly, will also serve the purpose of supporting the government’s request to reintroduce a legal moratorium on executions in the DRC.
