a court in Panchagarh, Bangladesh, awarded the death penalty to a man for killing his wife for dowry on July 31, 2004. District and Sessions Judge of the Woman and Children Repression Prevention Special Tribunal of Panchagarh Mohammad Afzal Hossain found the accused guilty. The prosecution alleged that Toimul Haque, son of late Mofiz Uddin of village Alegabari under Tentulia upazila in Panchagarh, married Alema Begum, daughter of Aliur Rahman of nearby Sepoypara village few years ago. The husband used to torture his wife for dowry. Since their marriage he allegedly took dowry from his in-law's house several times in the past. In July, 2004, Toimul beat Alema Begum mercilessly as she failed to bring an amount of Tk 8,000 dowry money from her parents and she died on the spot.
