In a declaration announced by Ensemble Contre La Peine De Mort, the French organisation said amongst other things: "A moratorium means less executions and death sentences on the decrease.
This is the main advantage of such a decision. From this point of view the resolution for a universal moratorium on executions would be a victory for those lives which are threatened, it is a partial but sure step on the path towards universal abolition of the death penalty.
For us, it is nevertheless an inappropriate step at this moment in time, more out of political than arithmetical reasons. In fact, from an arithmetical point of view we tend to agree with Hands Off Cain, which believes it possible for a favourable vote (at the UN General Assembly).
We believe that such a resolution would expose the Union to a politicisation of the debate on the death penalty."
Hands Off Cain has asked for an urgent meeting with Ensemble Contre La Peine De Mort in order to clarify these issues.
