In a editorial, L. Douglas Wilder, former Governor of Virginia, stated: "Virginia has shown itself to be a leader on any number of occasions. The irony here is that the state that has been in the vanguard of promoting advancements in forensic evidence and the efficacy of DNA still refuses steadfastly to discard the ancient 21-day rule of law excluding evidence discovered after the trial.... "If the 21-day rule was imposed on Governors as well as on the courts, then the inmate whose life I spared would now be dead."
