In April, it was reported that the majority of people who took part in an opinion poll carried out by the all-Ukrainian political union, Yedyna Rodyna (United Family), favored the death sentence as the highest punitive measure in Ukraine. A telephone opinion poll asking if Ukraine needed the death sentence lasted for 3 days with 1,023 people taking part in it. A total of 87% of those asked spoke in favor of the necessity of this punitive measure and only 13% of those asked were against it. Supporters of the death sentence think it is the only way to fight crime now. However, a part of those polled are convinced that the death sentence should be replaced by a life sentence.
