In San Jose, a jury decided that Cary Stayner should die for killing 3 Yosemite National Park tourists in 1999, rejecting defense pleas to spare a mentally ill man twisted by genetics and a traumatic childhood.
The judge, who has the option of sentencing the 41-year-old Stayner to life in prison. Sentencing was scheduled for Dec. 12.
Carole Sund, 42, her daughter, Juli, 15, and their Argentine friend, Silvina Pelosso, 16, vanished on a trip to Yosemite.
The killings puzzled law enforcement for months.
The FBI mistakenly said it had the culprits a group of methamphetamine users rounded up on unrelated charges behind bars. A grand jury investigation was under way when Stayner killed nature guide Joie Armstrong, 26, near her Yosemite cabin.
Stayner confessed to all 4 killings.
