in Uganda, a UPDF soldier is to hang after being found guilty of murdering two people. Pte. Gideon Ekunyu was convicted by court chairman, Lt. Col. Eugene Sebugwawo of the army’s Fourth Division Court Martial which convened a three-day public session at Kifua-wazi village, Kubala sub-county in Koboko district. The court, the first of its kind in West Nile, was held in the same area where Ekunyu shot dead Noah Adiga Mohammed, 41, and Thomas Ayile, 31, as they rode on a motorcycle on October 6. Three soldiers told the court that they were part of the team that arrested Ekunyu, who carried a gun as he sneaked into their military detachment through an illegal route shortly after gunshots were heard. They counted the ammunition and found that four bullets were missing. His gun reeked of burnt gun powder. The court heard that moments after his arrest, Ekunyu, whose trousers reportedly had blood stains, admitted that he had shot two people to "cleanse his troubled soul." Ekunyu, a former member of the Amuka militia, told his colleagues that ghosts of his late father were haunting him and that he had smeared himself with the deceased’s blood to keep away the evil spirits. He later led the team to the scene of murder where two bodies were found, each with two bullet shots in the chest. However Ekunyu denied being involved in the murder before the Court Martial. Sebugwawo advised him to appeal within 14 days if he was not satisfied with the ruling.
