It was reported that Ma Lijun, a tourism official from the province of Shaanxi, was sentenced to death for burning down a local Taoist temple because of a personal grudge. Ma Lijun hadn't been promoted to the head of a tourism administration for the local Baiyun Mountain as he had expected in early 2000, court records said. As a result of this Ma set fire to a main temple building on the mountain later that year, destroying it.
