the demonstration will take place tomorrow, Wednesday 21 November, at 11.00 CET in front of the Nigerian Embassy in Via Orazio 14, Rome.
Hands Off Cain will protest against the death sentence given to Safiya Hussaini, a Nigerian woman condemned to death by stoning for pre-marital sex and against cruel punishments
Safiya Hussaini, a pregnant 30-year-old woman, was sentenced to death by stoning by an Islamic court in Sokoto State, one of the Muslim majority states in northern Nigeria that introduced the Sharia in 2000. Her crime is pre-marital sex. She will be executed after weaning her baby.
The protest will focus not only on Safiya’s plight, but also the cruel inhuman punishments like stoning, the hundreds of whippings being inflicted on young unmarried women and girls for having sex, and the limb amputations for stealing and minor crimes, all punishments meted out in a dozen northern Nigerian States.
The demonstrators will send an appeal against these atrocities to President Olusegun Obasanjo through the Nigerian Embassy in Rome.
The Transnational Radical Party, the Italian Radical Party and the Greens will adhere to Hands Off Cain’s protest.
Green Party MP Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio and Senator Natale D’Amico of the left-wing ‘Margherita’ who have presented an interrogation in the Italian Chamber of Representatives and the Senate respectively, will participate.
The Radical MEPs also presented a parliamentary interrogation to the European Commission.
