Kano State governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau condemned in strong terms the Federal Government's proposal to abolish capital punishment in Nigeria. According to him the move was a deliberate ploy to undermine the Islamic legal system by the Obansajo-led PDP government. Governor Shekarau who made this observation during the swearing-in of the new Grand Khadi of the state, Khadi Daliru Rabiu at the State House, Kano, said posterity would not forgive any legislator from Kano State and other northern Muslim states who took part in the signing of the Bill into law." "Kano State government sincerely disagrees with the move by the Federal Government to abolish capital punishment because it is contrary to our lslamic injunctions", he said. Shekarau stressed that anyone who intentionally killed would also be killed no matter his status, adding that nobody would be treated as a sacred cow by his administration.
