Lithuanian public support for the death penalty increased following the September 11 attacks on the United States. A poll conducted by the Rinkos Tyrimai polling company showed that a whopping 9 out of 10, or 89 per cent of respondents in Lithuania were now saying the death penalty should be applied to terrorists.
The number of Lithuanians in favour of joining NATO after the US attacks also increased to 63.1 per cent from the 45.5 per cent who declared themselves in favour in a poll conducted by the same company in May. Rinkos Tyrimai carried out the telephone poll September 15 to 17. A representative sample of 500 people between the ages of 18 and 64 were selected at random. The survey results have a margin of error 4.4 per cent.
