the Bar Council renewed its call for the abolishment of capital punishment in Malaysia reasoning that the death penalty is a cruel and extreme form of punishment. Its chairman Yeo Yang Poh said that holding a person on death-row indefinitely or for a long period of time added to the cruelty.
There was also the possibility of error when innocent men and women were executed as experience all over the world had shown, he said in a statement in response to reports that several death-row prisoners in the country have been awaiting execution for many years.
Yeo said there was long delay in the clemency process because the Pardons Board convened infrequently.
"This issue needs urgent attention as long as capital punishment remains in our statute books," he said.
