Tan Chee Wee, a 30 year old Malaysian who bludgeoned his friend's wife to death in 2003 was hanged in Changi Prison in Singapore. Tan, who had racked up gambling debts of about $11,000 around the time of the murder, had been convicted after a five-day trial on September 29, 2003. His appeal against conviction was dismissed on November 17 of the same year. The attack took place on January 9, 2003, when Tan, an assistant store supervisor, went to 26-year-old Thabun Pranee's flat at Block 45, Chai Chee Street, with the intention of robbing her. Tan went to the victim's flat with a haversack containing a hammer, spanner, wrench, kitchen knife, a pair of gloves, masking tape and string. He lied to Madam Thabun that he wanted to use the toilet to get into the flat and struck her multiple times with a hammer to silence her while inside. At about 6.15pm that day, the woman's husband found her lying motionless in the master bedroom in a pool of blood and called the police. Thabun died from injuries to her head. The police recovered assorted jewellery and cash taken from the woman's house, and weapons used in the murder, at Tan's sleeping quarters.
