MALAYSIA. COURT UPHOLDS DEATH SENTENCES FOR CANNABIS TRAFFICKING

Abdul Rashid Rahman, a 43 year old unemployed man involved in a cannabis deal with an undercover policeman, failed in his appeal to have his death sentence commuted.
The Federal Court in Malaysia affirmed the death sentence imposed by the High Court and upheld by the Court of Appeal.
The panel also dismissed the appeal against the acquittal of Mohamad Fauzi Ridzuan, 47, by the Court of Appeal. He, too, had been convicted and sentenced to death by the High Court.
Two others jointly charged with trafficking in 4.7kg of cannabis at a petrol kiosk on Jalan Masjid in Penang on April 17, 1998, were acquitted without their defence being called.
