Mexico hailed the world court ruling calling for review of death sentences against 51 Mexicans in US prisons, convicts whose rights the Mexican government says were violated when they were not put in touch with consular officials. Arturo Dager, legal counsel for the Mexican Foreign Ministry, called the decision by the United Nations' highest court "a victory for international law." "This situation does not in any way affect bilateral relations between Mexico and the United States, which are very good. This is strictly a legal matter," said Dager, adding that his government expected Washington will comply with the ruling. Dager said the ruling handed down by the International Court of Justice "establishes a precedent that any other nation or citizen will be able to use." For Mexico, "it paves a path to follow in the defense of our compatriots who are facing the death sentence in the United States," he said. "We fully trust that the United States will do everything possible and necessary to carry out the ruling," said Dager.
