Moses Mulenga, 32, and Amon Banda, 36, were sentenced to death by Lusaka High Court Judge Gregory Phiri for the murder of Major Wezi Kaunda, the son of Zambia's first president Kenneth Kaunda. The two were alleged to have dragged Major Kaunda out of his vehicle before shooting him and fleeing with his vehicle in 1999.
"You had no regard for his life or his property and that's your choice. You decided to play the role of God here on earth," Judge Phiri said. "It's only God who has the power to create and to take away life. I find each one of you guilty on both charges and I convict each one of you as charged."
Kaunda had accused the government of his successor Frederick Chiluba of being behind the killing of his son Major Wezi Kaunda.
The former president accused Chiluba, who defeated him in the 1991 elections, of wanting the younger Kaunda dead to stop him from standing as a future presidential candidate. At the time, Wezi Kaunda, a former army officer, was the most politically active of Kaunda's children.
The killers, who from the onset of the trial pleaded guilty, said at one point they were commissioned to kill the former president's son, but did not say who sent them. Nothing in their testimonies linked them to Chiluba.
