New Jersey became the first state in the country to implement new police line-up procedures

New Jersey became the first state in the country to implement new police line-up procedures. Attorney General John J. Framer, Jr. mandated the changes because of the growing number of wrongly convicted inmates who have been exonerated by DNA evidence. In an effort to reduce the number of mistaken identifications, which studies show is the leading cause of wrongful convictions, the new procedures recommend that suspects be viewed sequentially, not together, and that the viewing be conducted by someone who does not know who the real suspect is.
