New Zealand’s Christian Heritage Party suspended its support for the death penalty to ensure the issue did not discourage voters.
Until now the party, which recorded its worst results in the country’s last election, had advocated the death penalty for murder cases where there were two reliable witnesses.
However, leader Ewen McQueen said the policy had raised too much "heat and emotion" and the party now wanted to focus on other core policies.
