"No human being has power over the life of another. There is no gift from God greater than life," said Cardinal Wamala when asked about his position on the abolition of the death penalty. Inmates on death row at Luzira Upper Prison, Uganda, had asked Wamala, who was celebrating mass at the prison, why religious leaders had not openly denounced the death penalty. He said the Catholic Church was opposed to the death penalty and would continue advocating its abolition. "We live and know these prisoners individually. and most of them have reformed. Our task is to rehabilitate prisoners. We can not rehabilitate dead ones. We would like to see them free," the Kampala Extra regional Prisons commander was reported as saying at the same event.
