On April 14, 58 political detainees were executed in the notorious Abu Ghurayb prison, said the Iraqi Communist Party's Human Rights Center in another statement faxed to Reuters in Cairo on 20 July. The statement listed the 58 alleged victims by name and said a secret presidential decree had justified the "heinous crime" by claiming they had committed acts of treason. Sixteen were from Baghdad and the rest from the mainly Shiite Muslim southern Iraq.
