On July 28, Zambia United Christian Action director Reverend John Jere said to deny the death penalty was to insist on life for evil, as murderers would be given the right to kill without getting an equal measure of punishment. He criticized the Catholic Church's condemnation of the death penalty as not being in conformity with God's plan of punishment for law breakers. He said Father Pete Henriot's recent statement that "a nation which claims to be Christian should not practise the death penalty" was misleading because God is not against this form of punishment for murderers.
