One Austrian citizen in four stands for death penalty in cases of heavy crimes

One Austrian citizen in four stands for death penalty in cases of heavy crimes. That was the result of a representative public opinion poll by the market-institute in Linz. The result also showed that less educated people especially prefer a "hard line" against criminals.
"In cases of very heavy crimes I think the death penalty is also suitable" was agreed to by 24 per cent of about 500 respondents. 68 per cent agreed that "no society can do without jails at all". 57 per cent think that criminals who committed crimes repeatedly should be treated more harshly. 56 per cent said that "criminals who were sentenced to jail for life because of very heavy crimes should in fact stay in jail for life".
The experts on public opinion polls found out an interrelation between the results and the degree of education of the questioned: the higher the standard of education of the respondent, the lesser the readiness to prefer a "hard line".
