The South Korean government strongly protested against Beijing's failure to notify Seoul before executing a convicted South Korean drug trafficker in September and called on China to thoroughly investigate the circumstances. South Korean ambassador to China, Kim Ha-joong, filed a strong protest with Vice Chinese Foreign Minister Wu Donghe, Kim Kyong-keun, director-general at the Foreign Ministry's Overseas Residents and Consular Affairs Bureau, said.
Meanwhile, the government is checking to see if Chinese authorities physically abused two other South Koreans serving drug-related sentences in China. The two, identified as Park and Chung, were arrested years prior on charges of colluding with the executed, identified only by his family name Shin.
Park claimed that Chinese authorities tortured him after his arrest. Initially, four South Koreans were arrested, one died while in detention. The four were found to have tried to manufacture illicit methamphetamines in China for export to South Korea.
