Organisers of the Miss World beauty pageant asked the Nigerian Government not to carry out the death sentence of Amina Lawal, a single mother condemned to stoning. Pageant organisers have come under fire on one side from beauty queens who are threatening to boycott it in protest against the stoning sentence, and on the other by Nigeria's Muslim groups that see the event as immoral. Miss World president Julia Morley cancelled an inspection tour in eastern Nigeria to meet Government ministers. "We are appalled that such an action might take place," she said.
