Over 200 people, most of them women and children, fell to victim to acid-throwing across the country during the first 10 months of 2000 according to an estimate of the Bangladesh Human Rights Commission (BHRC).
In a statement the BHRC said that although there was a provision for awarding capital punishment to the acid-throwers under the Women and Children Repression Ordinance-2000, trials for offenders in this regard were allegedly not being held.
