Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said through her spokesman that she agreed to the idea of executing convicted big-time drug traffickers in an effort to curb the drug problem in the country. Arroyo's declaration was made in reaction to statements issued by officials of the Philippine National Police and the government' s leading anti-drug agency, the Philippine Drug-Enforcement Agency (PDEA), that the application of the death penalty on convicted drug lords would be beneficial to the government's anti-drug campaign. Chief Superintendent Edgardo Aglipay, the head of the Philippine National Police's anti-illegal drugs task force, said Thursday that convicted drug traffickers on death row should be executed immediately. "They were proven to have done wrong to society. If they were sentenced to death, they should be killed."
