Rehmat Shah Afridi, owner of The Frontier Post was sentenced to death on drug smuggling charges.
Afridi, who denied the charges, was arrested in April 1999 after 21kg of hashish were allegedly found in his car. The prosecution also claimed that 700kg of hashish were later found in a truck that belonged to him. He was sentenced by the Session Court in the northeastern city of Lahore.
The Frontier Post, a major English-language daily, had been closed down in January for alleged blasphemy after it published a letter that was said to make derogatory remarks against Islam's prophet, Mohammed, but recently reopened. Afridi was in prison at the time on the drugs charges.
