Ripon, 20, was sentenced to death by the a Speedy Trial Court in Bangladesh for the murder of his brother-in-law at Demra. Judge Sahed Nooruddin condemned Ripon to death for strangulating to death five and a half year old Don on 29 February 2002. "It is not a fair judgement," Ripon said after hearing the verdict. Pale and extremely perturbed Ripon was heard telling his relatives in the court, "I do not mind walking to the gallows, but I cannot bear the cries of my mother". Apparently happy at the judgement his wife Tithi commented, "he should be hanged to death right now." According to the prosecution, Ripon was living at his in-law's. He had a quarrel with wife Tithi over some land belonging to her father that he wanted. Don being Tithi's only brother was the heir of the land. As he felt that he would not be given the land Ripon strangulated Don to death.
