Shi Qiaoling, a former doctor with the Tumour Hospital under the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, was sentenced to death for defrauding 10.98m yuan of public funds.
According to the sentence imposed by the No 2 Intermediate People's Court of Beijing, Shi was deprived of her political rights for life and confiscated of all of her private property.
The court also gave Shi's accomplice Chen Yumei a 10-year imprisonment at the first instance trial. Shi used her role as head of the inpatients office responsible for the accounting department at the hospital between 1996 and 1999 to forge 1,081 refund certificates, through which she grafted a total of 9.2 million yuan.
Between July and December in 1999, she embezzled 3.77m yuan of the hospital's funds. Since the crime was discovered, Shi returned 2m yuan of the embezzled funds to the hospital. However, Shi refused to tell the whereabouts of the rest of the money.
