The Intermediate People's Courts of Shantou City and Jieyang City in Guangdong Province condemned 19 people to death and 30 others to life imprisonment for falsifying value added tax (VAT) invoices.
In the biggest tax-fraud case so far, involving 150 criminal gangs in Chaoyang and Puning, false VAT invoices reached a total worth of 32.3bn yuan, involving 4.2bn yuan of illegal gains.
The Chinese authorities have launched a crackdown on tax fraud scams in east Guangdong, which became rife after the ceiling of the tax refunding rate was lifted, in a move intended to support the state policy aimed at encouraging exports.
