Speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives Aminu Bello Masari said that no matter related to the abrogation of capital punishment in the country had ever been tabled before the House. Masari was reported to have said in Lagos, on his way to Kenya the previous week, that the lower chamber was working towards outlawing the death penalty in the country to conform with global trends. But speaking in a BBC interview the Speaker faulted the report, declaring that the issue of abrogating the death penalty "was not and is not before the House. I think some people crafted their own views and attributed them to the House".
