State Duma Speaker Gennady Seleznyov suggested reinstating capital punishment in Russia for terrorism and other grave crimes. "The return of capital punishment, primarily for terrorism, is part of our party's platform. We represent the Party of Russia's Revival," Seleznyov, leader of the party, told a special conference of the party's St. Petersburg regional branch. "I understand that Europe does not like this stance. But it [Europe] has a very poor understanding of what is happening in Russia, when it claims that capital punishment is inhuman. Even though Russia has not used capital punishment for about seven years, there has been no sign of any reduction in assassination attempts or terrorism," he said. "Female suicide bombers and serial killers know all too well that they face 15 years in prison at the most. They may also seek amnesty. That is why, so long as the punishment does not match the crime, our children, women and elderly will continue to die," Seleznyov added.
