SUDAN: APPEAL LODGED AGAINST DEATH SENTENCE OF JOURNALIST MURDER SUSPECTS

the defence committee in the homicide case of the editor-in-chief of Al-Wifaq newspaper, Muhammad Taha Muhammad Ahmad, lodged an appeal to the Sudanese constitutional court to suspend the death penalty against the nine convicts. The head of the committee, lawyer Kamal Umar Abd-al-Salam, told reporters that their appeal was based on articles in the transitional constitution stipulating the right of the defendants to have a fair trial. Al-Sahafah notes that the constitutional court is the final legal resort before the execution of the death sentences issued against the defendants on November 10, 2007.
