Ten people were put to death in Beijing for ordinary crimes. There were 118 arrests for such crimes since July, the majority of which were condemned to penalties ranging from a minimum of five years to the death penalty. The arrests were due to the anticrime campaign in effect since the beginning of the year which will be stepped up in view of the 16th Chinese Communist Party Congress, reported Xinhua news agency. In the forthcoming weeks, "we'll have to step up the anticrime campaign, particularly against those hostile forces working within and outside our borders, the Falun Gong sect, terrorism, separatism and fundamentalist sabotaging activities, so as to avoid any terrorist activity", said Lou Gan, secretary of the government's judicial committee. The campaign must also hit the mafia and common criminals, he added.
