Ten thousand Muslim fundamentalists marched in protest through the northern Nigerian city of Kano to urge authorities to apply strict Islamic law, including stonings and other punishments. The demonstrators, members of a vigilante group known as the "Hisbah," chanted slogans denouncing Kano State Governor Musa Kwankwaso, whom they accused of backing down on promises to implement Shariah, or strict Islamic law. At the end of the peaceful march, they delivered a petition to the speaker of the state Legislature. The leader of the protest, Kabir Mohammed Dabo, called on the state government to pass legislation giving the vigilantes the power to enforce their laws. Prescribed punishments under strict Shariah law would include public flogging for drinking alcohol, amputation of limbs for stealing and stoning to death for adultery.
