The 539 people sentenced to death by hanging from 1957 until now, including 313 Muslims, were accorded their religious rights before and after the sentence was carried out, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Zainal Abidin Zin said. He said those sentenced could meet an adviser from their religion before and on the day of the hanging.
"After the sentence has been carried out, the body will be handled by the prison personnel or the family, according to the religious practices of the criminal," he said.
He was responding to a question by Muhammad Mustafa (Keadilan-Peringat) on how the death sentence was carried out.
"After the sentence is read out, a Muslim criminal, for example, is allowed to see his family and an ustaz."
On the day of sentencing, the ustaz would again meet the criminal to ensure he was told of certain required prayers.
The criminal would go for subuh prayers and after the sentence was carried out, prison officials present would read the al-fatihah and prayers led by the ustaz, he said.
Muhamad then asked if the Government realised that death sentence by hanging was an English law and not Allah's law.
Replied Zainal: "You must remember that Islamic countries like Pakistan and those in the Middle East also carry out the sentence. We have no intention to amend this."
